Discovering Buddhism

Discovering Buddhism at
Chenrezig Institute

Discovering Buddhism is an experiential taste of teachings and practices in the Tibetan Mahayana Buddhist tradition based on the lamrim, the stages of the path to enlightenment. It includes guided meditations and intensive practice days to come to understand and integrate the teachings.

The program comprises 14 modules of study and retreat covering the Buddhist path systematically. At Chenrezig Institute each module is completed over two months with a teaching weekend and a retreat weekend giving students time to study, practice and integrate each subject slowly, building a comprehensive base of knowledge and skills.

A new round of Discovering Buddhism will begin on the long weekend at the beginning of May 2024 (4th - 6th May). We have also scheduled two special weekends with Ven Tony Beaumont (in March and April) intended as revision for past students and introduction for new ones.

The 14 modules of Discovering Buddhism do not need to be completed in a set order or within any specific time frame, although the list below shows the recommended order. For those students who can’t make it to the centre every month, the course can be completed online. All the modules can be attended in person or online.

Students who complete all the modules and integration practices are eligible to apply to become an approved FPMT teacher at the Foundational Level.

Over the years, various wonderful teachers have presented Discovering Buddhism at Chenrezig Institute. We are very happy that Venerable Pema, one of our best-educated FPMT nuns, has agreed to continue to offer Discovering Buddhism for our students through 2024.

Ven Pema has completed both the FPMT Basic Program and the FPMT Masters Program at Chenrezig Institute and at Istituto Lama Tsongkhapa in Italy. We look forward to her enthusiasm continuing to benefit the centre and its students.
