Mind and Cognition

About Event:

Mind and Cognition – in two modules of four weeks.
Taught by Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim
Interpreter and assistant Teacher Ven Kartson

In the gompa and online

Module 1 – 3 August to 26 August

Module  2 – 7 September to 30 September

Part of FPMT’s Basic Program and taught by Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim, Mind and Cognition, studies the way the mind knows phenomena, and the mental factors that constitute the basis of our daily experience. It is a fascinating subject, sometimes taught as Buddhist Psychology. We learn to be aware of how our mind is functioning, how the presence of certain mental factors leads us to negative thoughts and actions and how this awareness helps us to control our mind and lead it into virtue.

Module 1 deals with Awareness and Knowers. The presentation of the various types of awareness and knowers explores the way we perceive and interpret the world around us. In fact, the path to enlightenment itself could be described as a progression from wrong forms of cognition to valid cognition, from ignorance and wrong view to the state of all-knowing wisdom.

In contrast to the first part of this subject, Awarenesses and Knowers, which investigates how the mind knows.

Module 2, Minds and Mental Factors, focuses on the states that color and control the mind, known as the 51 mental factors. Based on one of the earliest systematizations of the Buddha’s teachings, this practical guide offers us a key to identifying and cultivating positive attitudes that lead to peace and well-being.

Both modules will be offered three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). On each day there will be meditation, a teaching from our Geshe, discussion and an in-depth tutorial.

All sessions will be available in the gompa and online.
Zoom and YouTube links and access to the storage dropbox will be sent to students after registration.

about our teachers:

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his professional translator, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma from both the Gompa and by the example he sets outside of the Gompa.

Our interpreter and assistant teacher Ven Kartson is a delightfully engaging teacher and expands and clarifies the sometimes complex material of the in depth program with wisdom and good humour.
