Nalanda Masters

About Event:

Have you wondered who the statues in the Chenrezig Institute Nalanda Masters Garden represent?

The Seventeen Pandits of Nalanda Monastery refers to a grouping of seventeen of the most important and influential Mahayana Buddhist masters from India’s past. This group includes Nagarjuna, Shantideva, Chandrakirti and many other masters whose teachings are still revered today.  His Holiness the Dalai Lama frequently refers to himself as a follower of the lineage of the seventeen Nalanda masters and in 2001 he wrote an exquisite poem in praise of the seventeen called “Illuminating the Threefold Path”

A description and history of each pandit can be read here: https://fpmt.org/mandala/archives/mandala-for-2012/july/the-seventeen-pandits-of-nalanda-monastery/

In this series of two teachings, Geshe Tsultrim will explain who these masters are, what they did and their contribution to the tradition that we study and practice today.

About Teacher:

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his professional translator, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm-hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma from both the Gompa and by the example he sets outside of the Gompa.
