The Middle Way

Part 3 of Buddhist Tenets – an integral subject of FPMT’s Basic Program

Tuesday, 8 March – Thursday, 31  March 2022

Three days a week (Tues-Thurs) 9.30am – 4.00pm

Nagarjuna wrote:
To say “it is” is a conception of permanence,
To say “it is not” is a view of nihilism,
Therefore the learned should dwell
In neither existence nor non-existence.

In March we offer a wonderful opportunity for students to study the assertions of the Middle Way Schools with Geshe Tsultrim and Ven Kartson (in person or online).

This is the third part of the Basic Program subject, Buddhist Tenets, even students who have not attended the previous two parts, will greatly benefit from this study of the most subtle, highest view of reality, coming to it, as we do through the mahayana motivation of great compassion and the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta).

In this context, the Middle Way, refers to our view of reality, finding a middle path between eternalism (holding phenomena to exist truly and inherently) and nihilism (holding that nothing exists). Geshela will teach us about the Middle Way in general, and explain the specific assertions of the Middle Way Autonomists, ultimately leading us to the highest view of the Middle Way Consequence School.

We will learn about the scholars who asserted and debated these views, and how the different schools assert external objects and persons, and relative and ultimate truths. Through listening, reflection and meditation, we will hopefully come closer to understanding the most subtle view of emptiness, realisation of which is absolutely necessary for us to remove all our obscurations and attain full enlightenment for the benefit of all!

With his skilful interpreter, Ven Kartson, Geshe Tsultrim will gently encourage us to open our minds to these new and complex concepts with plenty of time for questions, discussion and meditation. Ven Kartson will also lead daily tutorials giving explanations and background so important for our understanding.

Again the daily schedule will include morning meditation followed by a daily teaching; after lunch there will be discussion (to help clarify doubts) and the tutorial with Ven Kartson. Students who want to get the most out of this important subject are encouraged to attend all sessions (either in person or online) and to follow the weekly review questions and take the regular tests. Zoom, YouTube and Dropbox details will be sent out after registration.

Daily schedule Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week:
            9.30 – 10.00 am – meditation
10.30 am – 12 noon – teaching with Geshe Tsultrim
            2.00 – 2.45 pm – Discussion
            3.00 – 4.00 pm – Tutorial with Ven Kartson

If you have not participated in Parts 1 & 2 of this subject in 2021, please contact the coordinator at [email protected] after registration and she will make previous materials available so that you can revise what has already been taught. And feel free to contact the coordinator at any time if you have any questions.

About our Teachers:

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his excellent interpreter, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma both inside the Gompa and by the example he sets outside amongst the community.

Ven Kartson, a basic program graduate and the interpreter at Chenrezig Institute for 15 years, also teaches the tutorials for these in depth teachings. He has a very clear understanding of the material and is able to explain the details of Geshela’s teachings with good humour and day-to-day examples.
