About Event:

Buddhist Tenets – two parts of four weeks each in 2021 (more in 2022)
Taught by Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim
Interpreter and assistant Teacher Ven Kartson

Part 1 – 12 Oct to 4 Nov

Part 2 – 16 Nov to 9 Dec

Buddhist Tenets presents the philosophical systems or tenets of the four main schools of ancient Buddhist thought. It is a concise and accessible introduction to these four main schools, representing the differing levels of interpretation of the sutras delivered by the Buddha.

The study of this subject is essential for further study in the Basic Program, clarifying the basis for many of the profound texts studied in the monastic universities.

Continuing our more relaxed schedule of shorter parts with three days of teachings each week, study of this complex subject will commence during these two four-week parts in 2021 – followed by further study of the Middle Way Schools in early 2022

In 2021 we shall look at the introduction to what tenets actually are and who holds them, and delve into the detailed assertions of the Great Exposition and Sutra Schools whence much of our understanding of the mind and how it works begins.

Then in the second part, we shall approach the Mahayana schools with an in depth study of the complexities of the Mind Only School, founded by Asanga in the 4th Century, the school whose assertions may not be the highest view, but which His Holiness says are very valuable to loosen our tight grip on what we wrongly perceive as reality.

Both parts will be offered three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). On each day there will be meditation, a teaching from our Geshe, discussion and an in depth tutorial.

All sessions will be available in the gompa and online.
Zoom and YouTube links and access to the storage dropbox will be sent to students after registration.

about teacher:

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his professional translator, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma from both the Gompa and by the example he sets outside of the Gompa.

Interpreter and assistant Teacher Ven Kartson :

Ven Kartson, a basic program graduate and the interpreter at Chenrezig Institute for 15 years, also teaches the tutorials for these in depth teachings. He has a very clear understanding of the material and is able to explain the details of Geshela’s teachings with good humour and day-to-day examples.
