Discovering Buddhism

A Centre for Buddhist Study, Meditation & Retreat

 Discovering Buddhism Study Program

The Discovering Buddhism course is made up of 14 modules of study and retreat covering the Buddhist path in a systematic way. Each module is completed over two months with both a teaching weekend and a retreat weekend. This two month period gives students time to study, practice and integrate each new subject slowly building a comprehensive base of knowledge and skills.

More than just intellectual study, the Discovering Buddhism course creates a community of students who grow together supporting each other in their practice and understanding.

In 2020 the Discovering Buddhism Program will be taught by Ven. Thubten Chokyi.

Ven. Thubten Chokyi is a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition, ordained in 2006 by Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Before joining Chenrezig Institute she was the program coordinator at our sister center Vajrayana Institute, where she has been teaching meditation and Buddhism since 2006 including Discovering Buddhism. She has also led several successful annual retreats for Chenrezig Institute. Prior to ordination, she taught at university and in the community sector for over 20 years.

She is a member of the Sunshine Coast Interfaith Network and committed to interfaith dialogue for world peace. She is also the international director of Liberation Prison Project, a social services program of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) that offers spiritual advice, teachings, books, and materials to men and women in prison interested in exploring, studying and practicing Buddhism.

Discovering Buddhism. Samsara and Nirvana
with Ven. Chokyi

We are all stuck in samsara – our ordinary lives that seem to be an endless cycle of hope, struggle, achievement and disappointment, where somehow we don’t seem to be able to stay happy for very long. But things don’t necessarily have to be this way. The Buddha taught that is is possible completely transform our lives and experience a state of lasting happiness, freedom and joy. This is nirvana – an imperturbable peaceful and positive state of mind.

In this module of Discovering Buddhism, we will explore the profound teachings that clearly outline the mechanisms of cause and effect. These teachings show us how we create our own difficulties, as well as how we can break free of the cycles that keep us locked in to unhappiness and suffering. We will investigate how we can empower ourselves with practical tools that will give us the confidence, commitment and energy for spiritual transformation.

Discovering Buddhism : How to Develop Bodhichitta
with Ven. Chokyi

Loving kindness is the essence of Bodhicitta, the attitude of the Bodhisattva. It is the most comfortable path, the most comfortable meditation.
Lama Thubten Yeshe

Bodhichitta is the heartfelt wish to attain enlightenment in order to be able to benefit all beings. Without it, enlightenment is impossible, because Bodhichitta frees us from the habitual self-concern that prevents us from experiencing true happiness and lasting peace. But most of us have trouble just developing kindness and compassion for those that we know, so how do we give rise to the vast aspiration of Bodhichitta?

In this module of our ongoing Discovering Buddhism program, we will analyse the concepts of equanimity, loving kindness, compassion and Bodhichitta. We will explore why Bodhichitta is important, and will learn step-by-step methods for developing Bodhichitta ourselves.

These instructions are a practical and effective way to develop the good heart and show us how to make our lives truly meaningful.
