Garden of Enlightenment Project Print E-mail

About the project:
During Chenrezig Institute's 20th. anniversary celebrations in 1994, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Spiritual Head of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, initiated the idea of a garden of stupas. This would incorporate a large stupa fifteen metres high in memory of Venerable Geshe Thinley, a previous resident teacher of Chenrezig Institute, and many smaller memorial stupas containing the consecrated ashes of those who have passed away.
The garden will be situated beyond the small dam, south of the Gompa. The main focal point will be the large stupa which will be set in beautifully landscaped ornamental gardens with waterways and many alcoves of stupas with seating for quiet contemplation. A range of sites, sizes and styles of stupas will be available within these outdoor areas. The large stupa will be built above a series of rooms at ground level, containing smaller stupas.

The Benefits:
The main purpose of the project is to provide an opportunity for those who pass away, relatives, friends and visitors to the garden to create the causes for enlightenment. Lama Zopa Rinpoche has said, "Success depends on how much merit you have accumulated. This applies to success in life in general, and to success in particular practices which you do in order to achieve ultimate happiness of liberation or enlightenment. The whole of your success depends on your merit."
