A Taste of Tibetan Buddhism

Introductory level; all welcome

Explore the world of Tibetan Buddhism in an informal and relaxed environment.

Each session begins with a short video from the Discovering Buddhism series. Then there is an opportunity to discuss the topic and ask questions before the session ends with a guided meditation. A new topic will be explored each week, offering an overview of key Buddhist ideas from the Tibetan tradition.

You are welcome to attend some or all of the sessions.

Topics being covered include:

  • Mind and its Potential

  • How to Meditate

  • Establishing a Daily Practice

  • Karma

  • Transforming Problems

Many Buddhists ideas and techniques are very practical and can be usefully applied to your everyday thinking and interactions with others, regardless of whether you are a “Buddhist” or not.

A Taste of Tibetan Buddhism is led by Chenrezig Institute nun Ani Rigsal, who has studied extensively with highly qualified Tibetan teachers.

Keith Gracie Print E-mail

The CI community is greatly saddened by the loss of our much-loved board member, student, benefactor, and dear dear friend Keith Gracie.

Keith made an enormous contribution to Chenrezig Institute, particularly to our monks and nuns communities. His legacy will generate enormous benefit into the future.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Keith's wife Laurie their beautiful boys, and the friends and families of others lost in this tragic accident.

A Guru Puja dedicated to Keith will be held tomorrow evening, August 13, at 5pm in the Gompa. More practices will be scheduled and advised in due course. CI will also sponsor pujas to be undertaken by the monks at Kopan Monastery in Nepal to benefit Keith.

The Buddhist concept of reincarnation, while both mysterious and enchanting, is hard for most westerners to grasp. UNMISTAKEN CHILD follows the 4-year search for the reincarnation of Geshe Lama Konchog, a world-renowned Tibetan master who passed away in 2001 at age 84. The Dalai Lama charges the deceased monk's devoted disciple, Tenzin Zopa (who had been in his service since the age of seven), to search for his master's reincarnation.

Tenzin sets off on this unforgettable quest on foot, mule, and even helicopter, through breathtaking landscapes and remote traditional Tibetan villages. Along the way Tenzin listens to stories about young children with special characteristics, and performs rarely seen ritualistic tests designed to determine the likelihood of reincarnation. He eventually presents the child he believes to be his reincarnated master to the Dalai Lama so that he can make the final decision. Stunningly shot, UNMISTAKEN CHILD is a beguiling, surprising, touching, even humorous experience.

$15 per person.

Acclaim:

"Rich in drama and in the glimpses it gives of other worlds." – Mike Hale, The New York Times

"Lovely!" – New York magazine

"Fascinating insider's perspective…captures the beauty in wild nature and elaborate Buddhist rites and rituals." – Alissa Simon, Variety

"A poignant piece of non-fiction filmmaking…manages to be as graceful as its subject is divine." – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

"UNMISTAKEN CHILD inevitably leads you to consider the material world and to contemplate the balance in your own life between physical gratification and spirituality. The rugged landscape, in which mist filters through craggy cliffs and wild flowers seem to dance in the mountain meadows, suggests that religion and geography are profoundly intertwined. How we perceive the universe, time, death and rebirth has everything to do with altitude and latitude." - Stephen Holden, The New York Times "A rather fascinating look at a beautiful culture. The imagery is BEYOND STUNNING." – Sara Vilkomerson, New York Observer

"ENTRANCING BEAUTYE." – Kevin B. Lee, Time Out New York "[An] Intriguing, beautifully filmed documentary. The scenery is awesome." - V.A Mussetto, The New York Post
